I can't believe you didn't include that you were compelled to see this by your Australian friends who raved about it!
Kip Williams was the youngest ever Sydney Theatre Director and I would love to know how many shows have successfully transitioned from Australian theatre to Broadway - the other would likely be Prima Facie (maybe we specialize in one woman shows).
I do have to disagree with you about the use of screens in the second half of the play. I thought the use of the phone and filters was a modern way to displaying the distortions of vanity. We never get to see the distorted painting in the show, instead we see the characters distorted features via the screen which also helps make the morale of the story relevant in modern times. It displayed how he went mad, completely overwhelmed with self-grandeur which lead into making it more believable that he could commit the acts in the latter half of the play.
I love that comparison with the portrait and the filters—I agree that the section where she distorted her face was creepily effective. The Snapchat-esque felt too far for me, I wanted Williams to trust the audience more that we'd get the parallels with our modern world.
This one so Good zoe

Don’t die. Get tickets! I believe in you.
